Recently, Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi of the Central Bank of Nigeria, stirred the hornets nest with his proposal that 50% of the Civil Service at the Federal and State levels should be slashed in a bid to cut recurrent expenditure, so as to provide funds for spending in other sectors.
Since the statement was made, there have been various reactions from all sectors, some supporting the proposal and others opposing it, while an enraged Labour called for his sack.

Firstly, KontriMan understands the outrage of people over Sanusi's recommendation. The direct implication of implementing this proposal would mean that people would be rendered jobless, further increasing the number of unemployed people in Nigeria. The issue of the state our economy must be addressed wholeheartedly and not piecemeal, if we are to move forward. All the loopholes must be plugged.
There is no doubt that the issue of the productivity of the Civil Service and its role, in building the economy must be addressed, it must however be wholistic. It is against this backdrop that the issue of identifying those who are needed to man the civil service should be looked at and even if people would be laid off, a re-integration and welfare package should be put in place and judiciously implemented.
Everyone knows that corruption is the major challenge in Nigeria, and as such must be confronted. Political appointees should be pruned down to only those that are needed and any corrupt official must be brought to book. The solution to our problems must be far-reaching.
Until then, Lamido should desist from over-heating the body polity with his careless statements.

If Malam Lamido had said that the civil service is to be reform would have been a different case but for him to now say that civil servant should be sack because of the PERCENTAGES he quoted but he should know that 70% of 1m could be 7% of 1b if all money that couldn't be accounted for are account for so prof should check his analysis again.

ReplyDeleteSanusi should lead by example,his useless policies is one of the major problem of unemployement in the country today,business are packing up,how can he justify wot happen to banks like oceonic,inter,etc where those his cronies came and finish up the banks,sanusi should be held responsible for wot happen to those banks.no evil done by man to a fellow man shall go unpunished.
