ON LAMIDO’S SON

The Nigerian media was on Wednesday, 12th December, 2012, agog with news of the arrest of Aminu Sule, the eldest son of Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido. He was arrested at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano, for his failure to disclose $40,000 at the airport on his way to Egypt. It was alleged that he was actively laundering public funds for his father, even though (as expected) the Governor denied the allegation, saying his son was on a health mission.
He regained freedom from the protective custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission after he was granted "administrative bail". The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said in Kano that it could not arraign Aminu Sule as there was no judge of the Federal High Court in Kano to take his plea as most of the judges were then attending the Judges Conference in Abuja.
We were expecting to get more information about the matter and hear on developments as the days went by. But that was it. There was nothing seriously in the news anymore about the matter (that is if there is anything about it at all).
Why is this so? Is it because of the person involved? Is it because of the kind of government and rulers that we have? Or is it because of the incompetence of our [news] media organisations? If this kind of [criminal] matter or allegation had involved the ordinary citizen, the KontriMan, would the matter have been forgotten just like that, and swept under the carpet?
KontriPipu we have to be more positively conscious of these things, and become proactive.
